Memoirs of a Geishaby: Arthur Golden
This is my first book review.
I decided to read this since it has been sitting on my floor in the collection of books I've gotten from library sales. It wasn't one I was particularly excited to read since lately I have been into paranormal/dystopian YA books.
I didn't feel anything too special towards this book. The plot was slow moving and there wasn't too much action. If you like history this may be a better choice. It reads more like a biography. I did like learning about the geisha lifestyle and Japanese culture has always been interesting to me so the read wasn't a complete loss. The main character (Chiyo/Sayuri) can be irritating at times due to her obsession with the Chairman. She revolves her existence around him and the fact that she ends up with him in the end is way too predictable in my opinion. I would have been more satisfied if she was reunited with her sister, Satsu. I thought they might go somewhere with that storyline. Also what ever happened to Mr.Tanaka. I was expecting him to make a reappearance. I didn't have any character that I was particularly attached to and I find I can enjoy a book more when I am invested in the characters and can easily pick a favorite. If you are looking for an action packed fast paced novel, I would skip this one, but if Japanese history interests you then I would definitely give it a go.
